Spedale degli Innocenti

Designed by Brunelleschi between the years 1421 and 1434, this edifice marks the beginning of Renaissance architecture with the revival of classical form. Circular medallions created by Andrea della Robbia adorn the arches that surmount the pillars of the veranda, and each medallion is different from the other. These images represent the abandoned children, the “innocent.” Inside, we find two cloisters and a museum that contains works by Ghirlandaio, Luca della Robbia, and Rossellino.

In Piazza SS. Annunziata you can also admire the  Monumento a Ferdinando I. Created like the one of his father Cosimo I in Piazza Signoria by Giambologna, actually it was the last artwork by the Flemish sculptor, who died before finishing it. It was completed by his disciple Pietro Tacca (the author of the Wild Pig) in 1608.
