Parks and Gardens in Florence

Florence is a city that even if small offers many green spaces for relax, breathing air and walking in surrounding enchanting landscapes.

A real ocean of green full of romantic Italian gardens for walking among statues and Renaissance fountains, parks or to run or lie down just for some sunbathing.

Florence sometimes enjoys hiding its best treasures. Many gardens are indeed behind gates and are opened only at certain times of the year or on special events and exhibitions.

Parks and gardens opened all year

Le Cascine -  The largest park in Florence: wanted by the Medici family as a hunting reserve , It covers an area of 118 hectares between the Arno and Mugnone.

Today it is used by the Florentines for jogging, cycling or rollerblading, or just lying down on a lawn to sunbathe. On Tuesday there is a large open-air market with all kinds of stands.

Hours: always open.
Admission: free.

Giardino di Boboli (Boboli Gardens) - One of the best examples of Italian garden with statues, paths, caves, hedges and fountains. The access is from Porta Romana, Forte Belvedere, via Romana or the courtyard behind Palazzo Pitti.

Arranged on a non-flat surface, it offers beautiful views of Florence from higher points (for example near the Kaffeehaus). In summer it is worth to attend one of the shows organized in the column Lawn.

Hours: April, May, September, October: daily 8.15 am - 6.30pm;
June, August: daily 8.15 am - 7.30 pm;
November - February: all day 8.15 am - 4.30 pm;
March: daily 8.15 am - 5.30 pm;
Closed on the first and last Monday of the month.

Bobolino - Less famous than its "big brother" (Boboli) Bobolino is the name under which some green spaces are called included in the first area from Porta Romana going up to the Piazzale Michelangelo. It is not exactly a garden, but you can find trees, flower beds and a large tub with jets. In spring and summer it becomes a destination for both people looking for a cool place to rest and for newlywed couples who want to enrich their photographic service including glimpses of unknown Florence.

Hours: always open.
Admission: free.

Giardino di Villa Bardini - Recently restored it is a very beautiful garden besides the Villa with the same name (which often organizes exhibitions), and not far from Fort Belvedere. The garden extends on a slope where you can enjoy a terrific view of Florence. In the garden you can see various kinds plants and flowers.

Gardens open only at certain times of the year

Giardino di Villa Corsini - The large garden behind the “Palazzo Corsini al Prato” is another example of a garden with paths marked by hedges and statues. Also fragrant of lemon pots.

The garden is open to the public only during certain events, particularly at auctions or charities during " Artigianato e Palazzo " a show that takes place each year, in May, the ancient artisans crafts are represented. It 'a good time to visit this beautiful garden.

Giardino degli Iris - Under Piazzale Michelangelo, a very simple garden with flowerbeds of iris. This flower is the symbol of Florence. Open only in May it provides an opportunity to admire endless varieties of this type of flower, in many colours.

Giardino delle Rose
- A small garden below the Piazzale Michelangelo, open during the month of May, it offers a rich variety of roses and other small botanical surprises. Like , for example, the Japanese garden in Florence donated by a temple in Kyoto.
